Did you know that the Bronx Museum of the Arts hosts a free “Family Affair” event every month? Kids and caregivers can come, make art together, and explore the museum. This Saturday, the theme will be “Heart of the Bronx.” In a nod to Valentine’s Day, the museum’s website invites families to “spend an afternoon at The Bronx Museum of the Arts creating art together with your loved ones.”
The event will be from 1:00-4:00PM and you can register on their website.
A great read to go with this activity is….
Luis Paints the World (by Terry Farish, illustrated by Oliver Dominguez) tells the story of a young boy who is very sad to see his big brother Nico leave home for military service. When his brother tells him he wants to see the world, Luis decides to paint a large blank wall near their home with everything he can imagine is in the world. Then, maybe when his brother comes home to visit, he will want to stay.
Through painting, Luis copes with his feelings about his brother’s absence and expresses his love for him. Art and feelings are very connected and this makes art a great way for kids to express themselves when language isn’t quite enough.
